Engineering ethics is a set of ethical standards for engineers to follow which can apply to most circumstances that arise on the job. These standards may vary depending on the jurisdiction or discipline at hand. These ethical standards are the engineers’ obligations towards the public, employers and the profession. Some of the codes of ethics date back to the early decades of the twentieth century. The purpose of engineering ethics is to identify specific ethical issues that may arise in order to avoid a potential problem. Past ethical or technical issues can help engineers to learn from both previous failures and successes.

In Ohio University’s online Master of Engineering Management degree program, students explore ethical boundaries in courses such as Engineering Law and Foundations of Engineering Management. Students can also apply these ethical practices to a capstone project that they will complete by choosing a topic from their current workplace. For more information on this renowned, professional and respected student-centered program, please fill out the form on the right to learn more.

Engineering applies a variety of factors to a situation in order to find a solution to an existing or potential problem. The ability to interpret mathematical equations and understand scientific concepts are just some of the skills that engineers use to develop a concept or product. There are engineers in practically every field, from biomedical and chemical to mechanical nuclear. Engineers use problem solving skills combined with practical application in order to come up with inventions that present resolutions to everyday quandaries.

If you’re looking for a way to show your versatility as an engineering manager in any of these disciplines, the Ohio University online Master of Engineering Management is a great complement to your technical background to set you apart from your peers. This degree program gives you the tools to develop your managerial background while you use your engineering experience. Additionally, with an online degree program, you’re able to immediately integrate the competencies you’re gaining from class into your workplace.

For more information on this renowned program, please fill out the form on the right to learn more. Also, please see below for a closer look at the different engineering professionals in the field:

Aerospace Engineers

Engineers in the field of aerospace develop aircraft made to travel both within and outside of the atmosphere of the Earth. This includes coming up with designs, constructing the aircraft and testing the functionality of it. An aerospace engineer deals with sound control, flight-testing and software development. Other areas he may delve into include electronic functioning, dynamics simulations and risk assessments. An aerospace engineer is knowledgeable in many realms of education.

The Aerospace and Electronics Systems Society An organization that provides workshops, educational tools and a magazine subscription to its members.

Agricultural Engineers

Agriculture is a complex system of plants, animals, chemical and mechanicals. Agricultural engineers look at the entire situation and provide a solution to a dilemma. This can include implementing a system for efficient crop production. There are opportunities for agricultural engineers to work in management, sales or production. They may also be more involved in the research end of projects. This occupation demands attention to detail and a broad array of knowledge.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers The ASABE focuses on the advancement of engineering within the agricultural system.

International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering The mission of CIGR is to assist in the development of the Agricultural Engineering field.

Biomedical Engineers

Engineering is executed in the field of medicine to solve problems. Design techniques are implemented to bring about new and life-saving machinery. Diagnostic equipment is also studied and improved upon. Engineering in this filed even extends to the development of artificial DNA. A person working within this sector of the field may face philosophical controversy from others and they must be prepared for this aspect.

Biomedical Engineering Society Provides published journals, information and a meeting arena for industry professionals.

Chemical Engineers

Chemical engineers develop products used in many industries. A product, or combination of products, is transformed until it meets the specifications. Adhesives, fuel made from vegetation and synthetic textiles are all the result of chemical engineering. Products are also designed to assist with manufacturing dilemmas. This profession requires a person to have excellent mathematical skills.

Civil Engineers

The responsibilities of a civil engineer are tremendous. These responsibilities can include making sure a structure will be sound, assessing water pathways and laying out roadways. In any of these circumstances, there is much to think about. Every detail must be looked over to make sure the finished project is safe.

Civil engineering is gaining more importance in the world today, as there is an increasing need for buildings and structures to be constructed. As such, the career prospects for civil engineers are very bright. A career in civil engineering can be very challenging, but it promises great financial and personal rewards.

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a form of engineering that involves the designing, construction, and maintenance of a wide range of man-made structures, which include buildings, roads, bridges, canals, dams, and others. It is known as the second oldest form of engineering, after military engineering. It is practiced on all levels of the society, from municipal and federal levels in the public sector to individual and international commercial projects in the private sector.

Civil engineers often look to advance their bachelor’s degrees with a specialization in the field, and another option is to consider the Ohio University online Master of Engineering Management. This program is taught by renowned faculty who are recognized experts in their fields, and Ohio University’s Russ College of Engineering and Technology is home to the Russ Prize, one of the top three engineering awards in the world. For more information how this degree will prepare a civil engineer to become a leader in this field, please fill out the form on the right to learn more.

There are many sub-divisions of civil engineering, ranging from construction engineering to transportation engineering. Each discipline contributes to the society in a certain way, but generally, the purpose of civil engineering is to create functional and efficient structures that are also aesthetically pleasing. Some of the major challenges that are faced by civil engineers include the need for structural soundness, functionality, and conformation to local construction regulations.

Civil Engineering Career Options

Those who have a civil engineering degree have a wide range of career options to choose from. They can seek employment with municipal, state, or federal departments, and contribute to the construction of public buildings, roads, railways, and other structures. Alternatively, they can also work as project managers in privately-owned real estate and construction companies and build residential and commercial buildings. Some companies also need civil engineers to construct industrial structures.

Other than constructing buildings and structures, civil engineering graduates can also perform tasks such as analyzing and designing buildings, supervising other engineers, and managing complex construction projects. Some civil engineers also choose to go into engineering research or teach engineering in universities and colleges. Accomplished engineers can also start their own engineering consultancy businesses.
